Ways to Track Pitch Performance
Monitoring your pitch performance is critical for refining your PR strategy and demonstrating results. Muck Rack offers several tools to help you track and analyze the effectiveness of your pitches.
Muck Rack provides three primary tools for analyzing pitch performance:
Each tool offers unique insights to help you measure success and optimize your strategy.
Why Track Pitch Performance?
Tracking pitch performance allows you to:
Evaluate Effectiveness: Understand how journalists engage with your pitches through metrics like open rates, clicks, and responses.
Enhance Targeting: Identify which journalists or outlets are most responsive to improve the focus of your efforts.
Prove ROI: Connect pitch performance to media coverage and overall outcomes to showcase the value of your PR work.
Tracking Pitch Performance Using Pitch Analytics
Pitch Analytics provides real-time insights into the engagement metrics for your pitches. With this tool, you can:
Monitor Engagement: See who opened your pitches, clicked links, or unsubscribed.
Inform Your Follow-Up Strategy: Send a follow-up pitch a few days after your initial email to reporters who haven’t responded but have opened your pitch or clicked on links.
Update Media Lists: See who is worth removing or keeping on your media lists based on their level of engagement.
Tracking Pitch Performance Using Coverage Reports
Coverage Reports allow you to link your pitches to the media coverage they generate, providing a clear connection between your outreach efforts and results:
Once you've assigned pitches to coverage in your report, you can then apply a Pitch Placement filter to quickly surface your placements:
From that point, you can do a few useful things:
Export to collect and showcase your placements (make sure you have 'Filtered rows' selected as your Export option)
Select and add your placements to a Newsletter
Select and add your placements from one Coverage Report to another. (For example, from a Coverage Report for a campaign to one that consolidates placements across multiple campaigns into one report)
Tracking Pitch Performance Using Dashboards
Dashboards offer a high-level overview of pitch performance alongside other PR metrics that give you a powerful way to illustrate the business impact of your outreach efforts.
To get you started, we recommend leveraging the Outreach Performance template:
For those with a Muck Rack Premier subscription, we then recommend adding additional custom widgets to further illustrate Return on Investment (ROI), such as a Google Analytics widget next to Message Volume and Articles Over Time widgets to show how outreach efforts impacted earned media and website traffic.
