Search allows you to explore articles, outlets, journalists, and broadcasts, providing access to information within the media industry.

Search in Muck Rack

With Muck Rack's Search, easily explore articles, media outlets, journalists, and broadcasts to gain valuable insights on topics, industries, or events. Use search types like People, Articles, Media Outlet, and Broadcast to support your projects. Access up to 5 years of historical data to inform strategies and track changes over time.

People Search

People Search allows you to discover and connect with relevant people in the media and communications industry, making building relationships, collaborating on stories, or pitching ideas easier.

  1. Select the People tab from the search tool.

  2. Enter keywords related to the people you wish to find (e.g., "artificial intelligence" or "AI"). Press Enter or select the Search icon.

  3. Browse through the search results to find relevant individuals. Select a journalist's name to view more information via a quick view panel, or navigate to their full profile by selecting the View Full Profile button at the bottom.

People Search Filters

Filter

Function

Verification

Display only Muck Rack-verified journalists.

Must Appear In

Allows you to specify where your search terms must appear within the results.” And then “when using this filter the search results will only display journalists who have mentioned or written about the specified terms in the selected sections.

Bios and Titles

By enabling this filter, the search results will only include journalists who have written blogs or articles with the specified terms in their titles. This filter allows users to target journalists who have created content specifically related to the keywords or topics of interest.

Beats

Filter journalists based on the specific topics or industries they cover.

Outlet Type

Filter journalists based on the type of media outlet they work for (e.g., newspaper, magazine, online publication).

Location

Narrow down results by specifying a particular geographic area.

Date Range

Allows you to specify a specific timeframe you want to search for articles or media coverage.

Scope

Allows you to narrow down your search results by specifying specific areas or scopes of expertise.

Media Lists

Enables you to search for journalists based on specific curated lists or groups.


Article Search

Article Search helps you find specific articles or content within a database, website, or platform. By conducting an article search, you can efficiently navigate through content to find specific articles that align with your informational needs, allowing them to access valuable insights and knowledge.

  1. Select the Articles tab on the Advpage.

  2. Enter your keywords and press Enter or click the Search icon.

  3. Browse through the search results to find relevant articles. Select an article headline to be directed to the article on the outlet’s website.

Article Search Filters

Filter

Function

Date Range

Allows you to select a specific timeframe within which you want to search for articles. You can search up to 5 years.

Must Appear In

Allows you to specify certain terms or keywords that must be present in the headline or article body results. When using this filter, the search results will only display articles containing specified terms in their content, titles, or metadata.

Verification

Filters outlets based on their verification status. Verified articles have been independently fact-checked or vetted by reputable sources.

Language

Search for articles in specific languages. You can select one or multiple languages to refine Your search.

Article Topics

Muck Rack will automatically analyze the text of an article, determine what it is about, and assign up to 4 Topics to that article.

You can then use the new Article Topics filters to include some, all, or none of the topics you see in your results.

Market

Narrow down results by specifying a particular geographic area based on the location of a media outlet.

Media Outlet Types

Filter articles based on the type of media outlet they are published in. You can select specific outlet types, such as newspapers, magazines, online publications, or broadcast outlets, to refine your search results according to your preferences.

Media Outlets

Enables you to search for articles specifically from selected media outlets. You can choose specific media outlets or a combination of outlets to narrow down the search results to articles published by those particular sources.

Content Types

Allows you to filter articles based on specific types of content, print or online. This filter helps you find articles that match your preferred content format or style.

Scopes

Search for articles within specific areas or scopes of expertise. Like the "Scopes" filter in People Search, this filter helps you find articles that cover particular topics or industries of interest.

Media Lists

Enables you to search for articles specifically from curated media lists or groups.

Locations

Allows you to search for articles based on geographic location.

Domains

Search for articles from specific website domains. You can enter domain names related to specific websites to find articles published on those websites or from related sources. This filter helps You focus your search on articles from preferred domains or sources.



Media Outlet Search

Media Outlet Search allows you to explore different media outlets based on keywords. It is valuable for media professionals, PR teams, and journalists who want to identify relevant media outlets for their campaigns or outreach efforts. You can search for outlets by location, type, or other criteria to discover new publications, broadcasters, or online platforms for potential media coverage or partnerships.

  1. Select the Media Outlets tab on the Advanced Search page.

  2. Enter your keywords and press Enter or select the Search icon.

  3. Browse through the search results to find relevant media outlets. Select an outlet name or profile avatar to access the outlet page.

Media Outlet Search Filters

Filter

Function

Must Appear In

Specify terms or keywords that must be present in the search results. This filter ensures that the search results only include content that mentions or covers the specified terms, helping you find relevant media content.

Verification

Lets you filter media content based on its verification status. Verified content has been independently fact-checked or vetted by reputable sources or organizations. Learn more about getting verified here.

Languages

Enables you to search for media content in specific languages.

Media Outlet Types

Filter media content based on the type of media outlet. You can select outlet types such as newspapers, magazines, online publications, broadcast outlets, or social media platforms to narrow down your search results according to your preferences.

Scopes

Helps you search for media content within specific areas or scopes of expertise, helping you find content that covers particular topics or industries of interest.

Locations

Search for media content based on geographic locations.

Contributed Content

Allows you to filter media content specifically contributed by journalists or guest contributors. This helps you find media outlets that have been contributed by individuals outside the media outlet's staff.

Frequency

Filter media content based on its publication frequency. You can select daily, weekly, or monthly, frequency options to refine your search results according to your preferred publication frequency.


Broadcast Search

The Broadcast Search feature enables you to search for broadcast content, including television and radio. You can search by date range, locations, networks, programs, and more to discover relevant broadcast content and gain insights into media appearances, interviews, or news coverage.

Broadcast is available as a paid add-on. Please contact your Customer Success Manager if you want to add this to your subscription.

  1. Select the Broadcast tab.

  2. Enter your keywords, then press Enter or select the Search icon.

  3. Browse through the search results to find relevant clips. Select an individual broadcast clip to access that clip’s playback and closed-caption text.

Still unable to find a clip? It could be because:

  • The clip was aired in a broadcast market that is not available in Muck Rack

  • Closed-caption text was incorrectly parsed or omitted a portion of the broadcast segment

  • There was an outage in the broadcast stream for a market or location

Broadcast Search Filters

Filter

Function

Date Range

Lets you specify a specific timeframe for searching broadcast content. Setting a date range allows you to narrow your search results to content aired or broadcasted within that period.

Timezone

Search for broadcast content based on specific time zones.

Content Types

Enables you to filter broadcast content based on specific types of programming, Tv or radio, tailoring your search results to your preferred content type.

Locations

Search for broadcast content based on specific geographic locations.

Networks

Filter broadcast content based on specific television networks. You can select one or multiple networks to refine your search results and find aired content on those networks.

Stations

Search for broadcast content from specific television stations.

Programs

Filter broadcast content based on specific television programs or shows. You can search for content associated with particular program titles or keywords to find episodes or segments from those programs, helping you find content related to your preferred television shows or specific program segments.

Search Surrounding Clips

When inside a clip, you can access the Search Surrounding Clips feature to explore related or contextually relevant broadcast clips based on a specific clip you have already found or are viewing. It helps you discover additional clips connected to the original topic or subject matter. This feature can be useful for gaining a more comprehensive understanding of a particular story or event by accessing different perspectives or viewpoints provided by other broadcast clips.

Access to Broadcast Clips is a paid add-on feature. To add this to your Muck Rack account, please reach out to your Customer Success Manager.


Print Search

Muck Rack enables you to search, monitor, and measure the impact of print coverage you care about—be it your brand, competitors, products, spokespeople, phrases, or keywords. We partner with LexisNexis to give you access to print coverage in their database directly within your Muck Rack account.

You can access print content by going to Article Search and selecting the Article (Print) Content Type.

Full-Text Access Requires a LexisNexis Subscription

While searching for print content comes at no extra cost, access to the full text of print articles can be purchased as an additional add-on with your Muck Rack subscription. Without full-text access, articles from LexisNexis include the title and up to 500 characters around the search term.

Default Search Filters

Muck Rack search offers many different filters and it can be time-consuming to manually enter the same filters for every new search you run. To save yourself time and effort, you can set up default filter values that will apply to all new searches.

  1. Select Search preferences from above the Advanced Search tool, or navigate to Settings > Search preferences.

  2. Configure your filters to your preference, then select the Save button at the bottom.

NOTE: When setting up Default Search Filters from the search page, you may check the "Apply immediately" box to clear any previous filter selections and apply the defaults you just set up.
